DeadStock Project: Upstitch Workshop at Metroplaza

The talented girl at Up Stitch, Xen So, was present at Metroplaza over the weekend, teaching mall-goers to turn old t-shirts into something cute and practical.

The upcycling workshop was part of ‘Metro Green’, an annual program of the popular shopping mall in Kwai Fong. Surrounded by lush green and a bright sea of sunflowers, the outdoor space houses urban farming workshops hosted by the Rooftop Republic and upcycling workshops curated by us 🙂 And when it comes to garment upcycling, we naturally think of Upstitch.

Committed to promoting the art of crocheting, UpStitch taught dozens of mall-goers the fundamentals of finger crocheting. Yes, you can turn your old clothes into something useful just using our nature-gifted tool – our fingers!

Before the workshops, the designer-crafter turned dozens of old t-shirts from our warehouse into t-shirt yarns for workshop participants to use!

So what is Up Stitch?

If you were at our Pop-Up Swap at Hysan Place, you would have seen this girl patiently teaching the same technique. Up Stitch was originally initiated by Xen So, who studied Communication Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as a final-year project. And we have crossed paths with her several times since then. Xen experimented with clothes we picked, and we hosted several workshops with her.

While we will have more workshops at Metroplaza, you may want to visit the very beautifully made website of Up Stitch and learn how to turn your old t-shirts into t-shirt yarns, and what you can do with this magical material.

JupYeah DeadStock Project

Upcycle, mend and revive our skills and techniques as humankind.

Dead Stock Project enables consumers to deal with their own fashion waste locally, in a creative, fun, and Instagram-able way. Our workshops create new items out of domestic garment waste, turning old t-shirts, cardigans, or jeans into household-useful items such as a new rug, slippers, or decoration. It is a hybrid of popular cultures: fashion, upcycle, and handmade. We inspire consumers to create one-of-a-kind items that would give new meaning to what could have ended up in the garbage.

Local artists have been doing upcycle creations throughout the city, yet they could become unnoticed or outshined by global fashion chains. Through our Dead Stock Project, we want to empower local craftsmanship through our collaboration and push local artisan work to become retail-ready.
